Letters to the Congress  (2008)
Dear Delegate Peace,

I cannot support your position on HB 14, and I urge you to reconsider it.

The whole debate regarding illegal immigrants needs to be conducted, and solutions found, especially at the point of border
crossings; but your bill does nothing to address the problem at its source.

In my opinion, society benefits from encouraging all members of that society to become as well educated as possible.

Consequently, illegal immigrants who are functioning members of our society need to be encouraged to become the best they can
be.  Punishing them, especially our youth; placing obstacles in front of them to make it difficult to succeed; holding children
responsible for the sins of their parents; denying opportunities to yet another minority segment of our population; and otherwise
marginalizing our friends and neighbors who live in fear of retribution is hardly the American dream that my immigrant ancestors
envisioned for this great nation.

I also urge Senator Norment to speak against this bill in what I continue to believe is a more enlightened and compassionate Senate
as opposed to the House of Delegates.

I always remind myself of your pledge to do no harm.  I ask for your empathy for those young people whom you seek to
marginalize, and suggest that you consider if your legislation is, in fact, doing no harm to them.

Sincerely,

Bob
